We give advice that can be useful at two times: (1) when you are borrowing money from a subprime lender and want to avoid one that uses predatory practices and (2) what to do when foreclosure looms. However, there is often a need for additional advice at other times. Housing counselors serve this purpose. For advice from a truly nonprofit source, there is no substitute for a certified consumer credit counselor. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling can help you locate the right person at the right organization. The U.S . Department of Housing and Urban Development maintains a listing of HUD-approved housing counseling agencies. They can give you advice on buying a home, renting, defaults, foreclosures, credit issues and reverse mortgages. Just go to its website or call (800) 569-4287.If you or your counselor want to obtain information from the company to which you send payments, you may need the information request forms we offer. (To read them, you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader, available by clicking below.)
